Swinton Lions have unveiled plans to rebrand as Manchester Lions for the 2020 season.
The Championship club have submitted an application for a change of name although officials insist they will maintain their Swinton individuality by keeping the colours and including the return of the white’V’ on the shirt.
Swinton say the shift is needed to capitalise on the 2021 World Cup and also to guarantee the financial stability of the club by broadening its appeal to a broader audience, together with the City of Manchester Council and Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council.
A statement by the club said:”This decision is definitely not for shareholder gain, but contrary to the true requirement to secure a future of the club and also save it from extinction.
“It is worth noting that the board have rejected several firm approaches to unite other clubs at the immediate last but these strategies have been rejected since they were speculative and will do nothing to protect the lineage of the Lions as a standalone historical club.
“The plank firmly feel that there is a significant chance to expand the appeal of Swinton by getting THE rugby league club of Manchester.”
Swinton, who left their Station Road ground say the club will continue to play at Heywood Road in Sale and long-standing plans to construct a home that is new at Agecroft are not likely to come to fruition.
